Looking to run a half marathon? The Battlefield Half Marathon in Winchester is coming up in November as well as the Richmond Half!

Get ready to tackle a Half Marathon this fall with Runners’ Retreat! Geared toward all levels of runners, this training program will get you ready for half marathon season.

When:
Tuesdays @ 6:30pm
Saturdays @ 8:00am

Once you sign up, you’ll be added to an email group so you stay up-to-date on information. We’ll also send you a survey to help us determine your current fitness level!

Coaches

Charles Bowles holds a Masters Degree in Exercise Science from George Mason University. His running research has been published in a nationally recognized journal. He’s also a USATF Level 2 certified coach and has furthered his education through more than 15 coaching clinics. He’s raced the Apple Blossom 10K for 20 years.

Courtney Thompson is your point person for all your training group questions. Her love-affair with running started 8 years ago on a half mile stretch of road. She’s now run 5 marathons and more half marathons, 10Ks, and 5Ks than she can count. She’s currently chasing an Olympic Trials qualifying time in the marathon. She placed 30th in the 2018 Boston Marathon.

How it all works

Once you register for the training group, Courtney will contact you with a brief questionnaire about your running history and goals. Once we have your answers, Chuck will be begin crafting a training program that will suit your specific needs.

We’ll also invite you to join a private Facebook group so that we can mass communicate easily – and build comradery. If you don’t have Facebook, we’ll keep you up-to-date via email, snail mail, or even smoke signals (if that’s your style).

At group runs and workouts, we’ll pair you up with other runners who are in your pace group.

Throughout the 12 weeks, we’ll give you valuable information on stuff like “how to run a half marathon,” “how to fuel for workouts and races,” foam rolling, and more!

Want to stay in shape this summer, but not sure how? Join Runners’ Retreat coach Charles Bowles on Thursday evenings from June 14 – August 2 for a progressive speed work program designed to help you learn how to embrace the track and build fitness!

In this program, you get 2 months of coach-led workouts for only $30! Sign ups accepted through June 21. All levels of runners are welcome.

These workouts are a great complement to the Shenandoah Valley Runners’ track sessions for those looking for more focused training.

Participants will meet at Handley High School at 7pm.

During this program, you will get tuned up for local races like the Liberty 5K and Labor Day 4 Miler. You’ll also build a great baseline for our Half Marathon Training Program starting on August 6!

You’ll learn skills like drill form and technique, how to pace yourself for track workouts, and how to warm up and cool down from workouts. You’ll learn how to run faster and more efficiently.

Ready to kick your legs into a faster gear? Join Runners’ Retreat coach Charles Bowles for 3 weeks of speed work sessions designed to help you run faster and more efficiently.

For only $25, you’ll learn drills, warm ups, and work outs so that you can run faster and stronger than ever.

When: Monday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 PM

Get ready to tackle the 2018 Apple Blossom 10K on May 5 with Runners’ Retreat!

Geared toward novice and intermediate runners, this 12 week training program will get you prepped, pumped, and ready to go whether your goal is to finish or beat last year’s time. By joining this group, you will be surrounded by a team of experienced runners who will guide you through 12 weeks of training February 12 through May 5.

Both walkers and runners are welcome! Registration is open through February 26.

Your $75 training group fee will include:

  • coordinated group runs with pace groups on Tuesday evenings and Saturday mornings. At some runs, you will be able to test out shoes and other gear!
  • 10% discount at Runners’ Retreat on regular priced purchases
  • Training group technical t-shirt

*NOTE: We are no longer including the race registration fee in the training program registration. 

Training Plans

Novice

Novice means new. So if you’re new to 10K training, this program is for you! Not sure where you belong? This is a good place to start. You can always move to the intermediate program free of charge.

Intermediate

This training program is for you if the Apple Blossom 10K isn’t your first rodeo. Worried it might be too challenging? No problem! You can easily drop to the novice program later.

Mark Stickley is a 3 time Olympic Trials competitor in the 10K and marathon and holds 4 national titles. He’s a USATF Level 1 certified coach and currently head coaches the Handley High School boys cross country team. He’s raced the Apple Blossom 10K numerous times – even taking the win in 1992.

The plan is to meet for group runs at Runners’ Retreat at 6:30pm on Tuesdays and 8am on Saturdays. Those are subject to change though! And don’t worry, if you can’t make it to a session, we’ll keep you up to date on what to do.
