Three of the four days left in this week call for rain. I’ll be honest: I don’t like running in the rain. Even worse? Running in cold rain. Wet and cold just aren’t a winning combination – especially when my house is warm and dry. But the right gear can help.
If you’re like me, you hate being cold. So I have a tendency to wear too many clothes and then start roasting 2 miles into my runs.
Thankfully, I discovered this handy gadget on RunnersWorld.com: The What to Wear tool. Apparently, wet and cold weather requires a cap, light jacket, long sleeve shirt, gloves, and tights. No sweatpants? No parka? Shoot.
It’s also a good idea to wear a hat to keep your head warm and rain out of your eyes. A lot of heat escapes out of your head, so wearing a hat also helps keep your whole body warm.
But most importantly, keep your core warm. Your body wants to maintain an internal temperature of 98.6F. Drop below that, and you run the risk of hypothermia. Thermal gear like the Asics Storm Shelter jacket help to keep you warm and dry, but also ventilated so you don’t turn into a personal sweat sauna. Sweat can chill you as well, especially if it’s windy.
And in case you’re planning to run any wet winter races, it helps to wear a garbage bag at the race start to stay dry. An Oscar the Grouch impersonation might help with pre-race jitters too. You can also wear an old pair of shoes till just before the race start so your racing shoes are dry – nothing worse than cold wet feet!
