Is it really snowing again? Say it isn't so...

Mark Stickley, owner of Runner's Retreat on the Loudoun Street Mall, has formed a partnership with New Balance to create an adhesive handle that attaches to shoe boxes. The handle is an ecologically friendly alternative to plastic bags. (Photo by Scott Mason, Winchester Star)

If you haven't been to our "new" location you are overdue for a new pair of shoes! We moved to 135 N. Loudoun Street -- just a few doors down the street from our previous location on the Old Town Mall in Winchester -- in Jan. 2008. Our old spot is currently being renovated but we didn't close our doors!

You will notice a fresh new look if it's been awhile since you last came to see us (or even if it hasn't) . We've rearranged our store dramatically and we think you'll like it. Better layout, better lighting, cleaner and just more organized. But, most importantly, we haven't changed who we are. And that is, a running specialty store who's primary goal is service to our customer. Whether it's helping you find new running shoes or giving advice on training, injuries or places to run you can get it here.

Don't be intimidated if you are coming here for the first time! We know running and we are here to help. But be prepared! We'll ask you a lot of questions -- like how far you run, what your injury history is, etc. Bring in an old pair of running shoes so we can examine the wear pattern. If you're new to running just bring your bare feet so we can watch you walk. Then we'll put you in a new pair of shoes and watch you run down the mall -- outside, the natural habitat of most runners.

For the record, we parked our treadmill years ago. For one thing, it was broken. For another, we found that most runners (especially kids and others that are new to the sport) struggle to run naturally on a treadmill. And it's hard for us to get an accurate assessment of someone's gait if they are clinging the the handrails of a treadmill. Since most people run on hard surfaces it's best to try out new shoes on a similar surface.

Once we get you in the right category -- either Motion Control, Neutral or Stability -- we'll let you try on as many shoes as your heart desires. In fact we'll insist you try at least one, preferably two, other models. Remember, at Runners' Retreat you don't just get a pair of shoes, you get a workout! Then, when you're happy, we're happy!

If you are new to running or walking you definitely need to see us! Don't just buy something cheap to see if you will stick with it. Chances are you will end up hurt or uncomfortable and you won't. Invest in quality shoes up front and you won't regret it. We bet you will come to love running or walking!
